But I do remember the bus ride home.

Early in my coaching journey, I had one of those moments that sticks with you forever.

We were heading back from a tough match. The kind where emotions are heavy, players are quiet, and everyone is processing in their own way.

I was sitting near the front of the bus.

Alone.

Thinking.

Trying to make sense of everything.

And then it hit me…

I had been there before.

Not as a coach—but as a player.

Same feeling. Same silence. Same questions running through my head.

Understanding Relative Age Effect: What the New U.S. Soccer Registration Cutoff Means for Players and Families

Recently, U.S. Youth Soccer, US Club Soccer, and AYSO announced a significant change to the youth soccer registration cutoff date in the United States. Beginning in Fall 2026 , the cutoff will shift from January 1 to August 1 .

Naturally, this announcement has sparked a lot of conversation across the youth soccer community. Coaches, parents, and clubs are all asking the same question:

How will this impact our players?

The truth is that while the shift will change how teams are formed based on birthdates, it does not eliminate one important developmental reality in youth sports known as the Relative Age Effect (RAE) . What it does instead is shift where that advantage may occur within an age group .

Players who were once the oldest in their age group under the January 1 system may suddenly become some of the youngest when the September 1 cutoff is implemented.

Understanding this concept is critical for coaches, parents, and players as we continue to focus on long-term player development rather than short-term outcomes.

What Is Relative Age Effect?

Simply put, Relative Age Effect occurs when children are grouped by a specific cutoff date for competition.

Because of that cutoff, players within the same age group can have almost a full year difference in chronological age . In childhood and adolescence, a year can represent a major difference in physical, emotional, and cognitive development .

Players born earlier in the selection period often have natural advantages because they may be:

Taller
Stronger
More coordinated
More physically mature

But the difference doesn't stop with chronological age. During puberty, biological development varies widely between children , meaning two players with the same birth year could actually be 2–4 years apart in biological maturity . If you sit on the sideline watching a group of 12-year-olds play soccer, you might see players who look almost like high school athletes competing alongside teammates who still look like elementary school students. Yet they are technically the same age group. This is the reality of youth development.

Why Awareness of RAE Matters

For coaches, understanding Relative Age Effect is extremely important when evaluating and selecting players .

There is a natural tendency in youth sports to favor players who appear more physically dominant. Bigger, faster, and stronger players often stand out early, but that physical advantage may simply be the result of being born earlier in the age cycle or maturing earlier biologically .

Eventually, teammates and opponents will catch up physically.

Players who rely only on athleticism often struggle when the physical advantage disappears. Players who

continue developing technique, vision, decision-making, and soccer IQ tend to thrive long-term.

Parents should also be aware that growth spurts can temporarily affect coordination, speed, and movement. During these phases, players may look awkward or clumsy on the field. This is completely normal and part of the natural development process.

Patience and encouragement go a long way during these moments.

In some cases, it may also be beneficial for early developers to occasionally train or compete with slightly older players , which can help challenge them and accelerate skill development.

The Big Picture

It’s especially difficult when a player finds themselves on a third or fourth team, facing opponents who may be bigger, faster, more experienced, or simply further along in their journey. When losses are frequent and margins are large, frustration sets in quickly. Parents naturally begin to ask:
Is my child improving? Are they in the right environment? Is this worth it?

These are fair questions. Important questions. And ones we should never ignore.

Development Is Rarely Linear

One of the biggest misconceptions in youth soccer is that progress should be visible every weekend on the scoreboard. In reality, development happens in layers , and those layers don’t always show up in wins and losses—especially early on.

Players don’t improve in straight lines. Confidence, decision-making, awareness, and understanding often lag behind effort. There are moments where a player looks like they’ve taken two steps forward, followed by a weekend where it feels like they’ve taken three steps back.

My goal with this weekly blog is simple:

November 2025-January 2026 Events

Our Fall 2025 season is about halfway done but there is so much more to come for Bulls Rush FC in the coming months!

Fall School of Excellence and Middle School Pre-Season Training starting on November 5th and continues through December 17th. Both programs meet on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Our bi-annual School of Excellence program is for both Boys & Girls, ages 3-14. The one hour sessions, twice weekly, will go over the soccer skills that new (or old) players need to hone to succeed on the pitch. Registration is ongoing - register today to guarantee your training kit!
The Middle School Pre-Season Training is for current 6th, 7th, & 8th graders that want to be ready for the upcoming tryouts. They will focus on the individual and team skills needed to succeed for the Spring.

Money Dolly Fundraiser - Complete!

Thank you so much for the support of our fundraiser. It was cut short due to Hurricane Helene but in just 4 days we were able to raise almost $4200! We will be using this money to go towards our new field at the Boys Scouts off of Furys Ferry.

We will have another fundraiser to continue to shoot for the $100,000 for our new fields, portable goals, and land acquisition.

Again - we have the BEST families in the CSRA and we appreciate EVERYTHING you all do for the Club.

Our Club participated in the HundredX Fundraiser that ended in August and we were able to raise $3378.00 for maintenance on our new field! Thank you to everyone that was able to participate with our surveys.

The 29th Annual Columbia County Cup was a huge success for the Bulls Soccer Club and the surrounding area. We welcomed 115 teams from Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina to play over the weekend of August 24th. Our weather cooperated and everyone enjoyed the cooler August temperatures this time around.

We had Boys and Girls teams ranging from U8 to U19 participate this year. The Bulls teams had 11 Champions and 7 Finalists!
