AM I A GOOD SOCCER PARENT?
1. Do I always have my child at the field on time ready to play, properly fed and clothed, and with required gear (shin guards and ball) including water jug?
2. Have I taught my child to be responsible for his/her own gear prior to and after practices and games?
3. Do I always pick up my child promptly at the end of practice? Or if I have someone else picking up my child, do I inform the coach?
4. Do I inform the coach of all injuries, special medical conditions (such as asthma) or extenuating circumstances (such as lack of sleep or family crisis) which may affect my child's ability to play?
5. Do I understand the coach and team philosophy?
6. Do I refrain from instructing the players which would only serve to confuse them and undermine the efforts of the coach?
7. Do I try to avoid confusion when cheering? I never say anything that is a command such as "pass it", "shoot it", "kick the ball"? Of course I never yell at or ridicule my child or others.
8. Do I use positive encouragement and use only such comments as "way to go", "nice effort", and "good play"?
9. Do I avoid calling a player's name during a game which would distract him/her and probably cause him/her to miss a play?
10. Do I always sit or stand at least three yards back away from the sidelines for the players' safety and myself? Do I encourage other spectators to do the same?
11.Am I a positive role model for my child encouraging sportsmanship by showing respect and courtesy? Have I taught my child to respect his opponents?
12. Do I refrain from speaking to the officials unless it is to say "thank you" after the game? Do I respect their authority and teach my child to do the same?
13. Do I speak to the coach at the proper time? If I have concerns/complaints, I will wait a day or two to call the coach. Do I ever thank the coach for his effort?
14. Have I taught my child that doing one's best is more important than winning the game?
IF YOU CAN ANSWER "YES" TO ALL OF THIS QUESTIONS, THEN YOU ARE NOT ONLY A GOOD SOCCER PARENT, YOU ARE A GREAT SOCCER PARENT!!!
